Adverb

Meaning in linguistics & grammar, with examples

/ˈædvɜːb/nounCore term

In linguistics & grammar, adverb means: A word that adds information to a verb, an adjective, another adverb or a whole sentence, such as how, when, where or how often something happens.

How it is used

Many adverbs end in -ly (quickly, carefully), but many do not (fast, often, here). Teachers group them as adverbs of manner, time, place, frequency and degree, and practise their position in the sentence.

Example sentences

  1. Adverbs of frequency usually go before the main verb: 'She always checks her email first.'

  2. In 'He drives really carefully', both really and carefully are adverbs.
