Sanger sequencing
Meaning in genetics & biotechnology, with examples
In genetics & biotechnology, Sanger sequencing means: The classic DNA sequencing method that reads one fragment at a time, up to about 1,000 bases, with very high accuracy. It is named after Frederick Sanger.
In Turkish: Sanger dizileme
How it is used
Still used daily to check plasmids, confirm CRISPR edits and validate variants found by NGS. Results come as a chromatogram, also called a trace. People 'send samples for Sanger' and look for 'clean peaks'. Two overlapping peaks at one position can mean a heterozygous variant.
Example sentences
We confirmed every NGS finding by Sanger sequencing before reporting.
Sanger sequencing of the plasmid shows that the insert is in the right orientation.
Common collocations
- Sanger sequencing confirmation
- send for Sanger sequencing
