Meaning in education & teaching, with examples

/ˈruːbrɪk/nounCore term

In education & teaching, rubric means: A scoring guide that lists the criteria for a task and describes what work looks like at each level of quality, so that marking is clear and consistent.

How it is used

Common for essays, projects and presentations. Teachers create, share and mark with a rubric, and students use it to check their own work. An analytic rubric scores each criterion separately; a holistic rubric gives one overall score.

Example sentences

  1. Share the rubric before students start writing so they know what a top score looks like.

  2. Our presentation rubric has four criteria: content, organization, delivery and visuals.
