In data science & analytics, CTE means: Short for common table expression: a temporary, named result defined with WITH at the start of a SQL query, which makes long queries easier to read.

How it is used

Said letter by letter. Analysts break complex queries into several CTEs instead of nesting subqueries, and reviewers often ask 'Can you move this into a CTE?' A recursive CTE can walk through hierarchies such as an org chart.
