In artificial intelligence & machine learning, named entity recognition means: An NLP task that finds the names of people, organizations and places, as well as dates, amounts and similar items, in a text and labels each one with its type.

How it is used

Shortened to NER. Used to pull structured data out of contracts, invoices, news and medical notes, and to hide personal data. Custom entity types, such as product codes or drug names, often need extra labeled data.
