Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/ˈsʌnset/verbCommon term

In software engineering, sunset means: To gradually retire a product or feature and stop supporting it, usually after warning users and helping them move to an alternative.

In Turkish: kullanımdan kaldırmak, desteğini sonlandırmak

How it is used

A softer word than kill or remove, used in announcements and planning: we are sunsetting the desktop app. Also a noun: the sunset date. Retiring old features frees up time and reduces complexity, but it needs careful communication.

  2. Only 2% of users still open the legacy editor, so we decided to sunset it.
