RICE

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/raɪs/abbreviationCommon term

In software engineering, RICE means: A prioritization method that gives each idea a score based on Reach, Impact, Confidence and Effort, so that very different ideas can be compared.

In Turkish: RICE puanlama yöntemi, RICE önceliklendirme modeli

How it is used

Said as one word, like the food. The score is reach × impact × confidence ÷ effort. PMs often use it in spreadsheets during planning. It makes assumptions visible, but the numbers are still estimates, so the final ranking needs judgment.

Example sentences

  1. Using RICE, the search improvements scored higher than the new dashboard.

  2. Our confidence in the RICE scores is low because we have no data on reach yet.
