In software engineering, iOS means: Apple's operating system for the iPhone. Apps for it are built with Apple's own tools, mainly Xcode and the Swift programming language.

How it is used

Used as a noun and before other nouns: iOS app, iOS developer, iOS version. Developers often talk about the minimum iOS version an app supports. Since 2019 the iPad's system has its own name, iPadOS, but it shares most of the same SDK.
