DMZ

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

abbreviationAdvanced term

In software engineering, DMZ means: Short for demilitarised zone: a separate network segment between the internet and the internal network, where public-facing servers such as web or mail servers are placed.

In Turkish: DMZ, arındırılmış bölge, tampon bölge

How it is used

Spelled out letter by letter. Servers are placed in or moved to the DMZ, so that if one is compromised, an attacker still has to get past the firewall to reach internal systems. Firewall rules usually allow traffic from the internet into the DMZ but strictly limit traffic from the DMZ inwards.

Example sentences

  1. The new web server will sit in the DMZ, not on the internal network.

  2. Only port 443 is open from the internet to the DMZ.

Common collocations
