Broadcast

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/ˈbrɔːdkɑːst/nounCommon term

In software engineering, broadcast means: A message sent to every device on the local network segment at once, instead of to a single address; routers do not forward broadcasts to other networks.

In Turkish: yayın, genel yayın, broadcast

How it is used

Used as a noun and an adjective: broadcast traffic, broadcast address, broadcast domain. DHCP and ARP rely on broadcasts. Engineers keep broadcast domains small with VLANs, because too many broadcasts, or a broadcast storm caused by a loop, can slow down or stop a LAN.

Example sentences

  1. The loop caused a broadcast storm that took down the whole floor.

  2. Each VLAN is its own broadcast domain, so broadcasts from the cameras don't reach the PCs.

Common collocations
