Baseline

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/ˈbeɪslaɪn/nounCommon term

In software engineering, baseline means: A simple reference point, such as last year's figure, the current version or a very basic model, against which new results are compared.

In Turkish: referans değer, başlangıç değeri, temel model

How it is used

Used in modelling ('beat the baseline'), experiments ('baseline conversion rate') and reporting ('compared with the baseline'). You set or establish a baseline and measure against it. A model that cannot beat a simple baseline is not useful.

  2. The baseline conversion rate is 2%, and we want to be able to detect a rise to 2.3%.
