Artifact

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/ˈɑːrtɪfækt/nounCommon term

In software engineering, artifact means: A file or package produced by a build, such as a JAR file, a binary or a container image, which is stored and later deployed.

How it is used

Pipelines produce, upload, store and promote artifacts. A common rule is 'build once, deploy many': the same artifact goes to staging and then to production. Artifacts are kept in tools such as Artifactory or Nexus.

Example sentences

  1. The pipeline uploads the artifact to the repository, and the deploy job picks it up from there.

  2. We deploy exactly the same artifact that passed the tests on staging.
