Texture

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/ˈtekstʃər/nounCore term

In software engineering, texture means: A 2D image wrapped around a 3D model to give it color and surface detail, such as wood grain, skin or rust. Extra textures can control shine, bumps and roughness.

In Turkish: doku, kaplama, texture

How it is used

Artists create, paint, compress and apply textures. Texture resolution, such as 2K or 4K, has a big effect on memory, so teams set texture budgets. Players notice blurry textures, or textures that appear late, called texture pop-in.

Example sentences

  1. Halve the texture size on the background props; nobody gets that close.

  2. The rock texture repeats too obviously on the cliff.

Common collocations

  • high-resolution texture
  • texture memory
  • texture compression
  • apply a texture
  • texture streaming
