Roaming

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/ˈrəʊmɪŋ/nounCommon term

In software engineering, roaming means: Using a mobile network other than your own operator's, usually abroad; in Wi-Fi, moving from one access point to another without losing the connection.

How it is used

Mobile operators sign roaming agreements and charge roaming fees, and customers turn data roaming on or off. Wi-Fi engineers tune roaming so that phones and laptops switch smoothly to a closer access point as people walk around a building.

Example sentences

  1. Turn off data roaming before you land, or the bill could be very high.

  2. Calls drop when people walk to the warehouse, so we need to look at Wi-Fi roaming.
