ORM

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/ˌoʊ ɑːr ˈɛm/abbreviationCore term

In software engineering, ORM means: Object-relational mapping: a library that lets developers work with database rows as objects in their programming language and generates the SQL for them.

In Turkish: nesne-ilişkisel eşleme, ORM

How it is used

Popular examples are Hibernate, Entity Framework, Django ORM, SQLAlchemy, Prisma and ActiveRecord. ORMs save time but can hide inefficient queries; the most famous problem is the 'N+1 query problem'. Developers often mix ORM code with raw SQL for complex reports.

Example sentences

  1. The ORM is sending one query per order item; that's a classic N+1 problem.

  2. For this report, skip the ORM and write the SQL by hand.

Common collocations
