Object detection

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

nounCommon term

In software engineering, object detection means: A computer vision task that finds objects in an image or video and gives both their class, such as 'car' or 'person', and their position, usually as a box.

In Turkish: nesne tespiti, nesne algılama

How it is used

Used in traffic cameras, retail shelves, factory inspection and self-driving cars. Engineers talk about detectors, bounding boxes, confidence scores and mAP (mean average precision). It goes further than image classification, which gives one label per image.

  2. For object detection we need boxes, not just one label per photo.
