Health check

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

nounCommon term

In software engineering, health check means: A regular automatic test, often a request to a special URL such as /health, that checks whether a server or service is working and able to take traffic.

In Turkish: sağlık kontrolü, durum kontrolü, health check

How it is used

Load balancers use health checks to stop sending traffic to broken servers. Kubernetes has liveness probes (restart if stuck) and readiness probes (send traffic only when ready). Health checks pass or fail.

Example sentences

  1. The health check failed three times, so the load balancer stopped sending traffic to that instance.

  2. Our health check endpoint also tests the database connection, not just the web server.

Common collocations

  • health check endpoint
