Granularity

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

/ˌɡrænjəˈlærəti/nounCommon term

In software engineering, granularity means: The level of detail in data, meaning what one row represents, for example one row per order, per customer per day or per store per month.

In Turkish: ayrıntı düzeyi, granülerlik, detay seviyesi

How it is used

Also called the 'grain' of a table. Data can be fine-grained (very detailed) or coarse (summarised). Analysts ask 'What's the granularity of this table?' before a join, because mixing levels leads to double counting.

Example sentences

  1. The orders table is at order-level granularity, but the targets are monthly.

  2. We store events at the finest granularity and aggregate them later.

Common collocations

  • daily granularity
  • level of granularity
  • finer granularity
  • grain of the table
