نقارن الأسعار والهواتف والمدن والأشخاص والطقس. صيغة المقارنة بين شيئين غالبًا مع than، وصيغة التفضيل لواحد من ثلاثة أو أكثر غالبًا مع the.
يعتمد الاختيار أساسًا على طول الصفة، مع شواذ مثل good وbad وfar. وتفيد as ... as في المساواة، وmuch أو a lot أو a bit في بيان مقدار الفرق.
تركيب المقارنة والتفضيل
احسب المقاطع: صفة المقطع الواحد تأخذ -er و-est. ذات المقطعين أو أكثر تأخذ عادةً more وmost، إلا المنتهية بـ y في مقطعين فتصبح i ثم -er/-est.

- ضاعف الساكن الأخير فقط بعد علة واحدة وساكن واحد في صفة أحادية المقطع: thin → thinner, sad → the saddest. لا تضاعفه بعد علتين أو مع w: cheap → cheaper, new → newer. تتحول y بعد ساكن إلى i: busy → busier, early → the earliest.
- تقبل بعض الصفات ذات المقطعين الصيغتين: quieter/more quiet, narrower/more narrow, friendlier/more friendly.
- الصفات المنتهية بـ -ed تستخدم more وmost ولو كانت قصيرة: more tired, the most bored.
- farther وfurther للمسافة، والأمريكية تفضل غالبًا farther. وحدها further بمعنى إضافي: Do you need any further help?
- تعمل الظروف بصورة مماثلة: fast → faster, hard → harder, carefully → more carefully, well → better, badly → worse.
- تُنطق than عادةً بلا نبر /ðən/: taller than me.
متى نستخدم المقارنة والتفضيل؟
المقارنة بين اثنين
استخدم صيغة المقارنة ثم than. ويمكن حذف than والطرف الثاني إذا كان المقصود واضحًا.
- My brother is three years older than me.
- The train is faster than the bus, but it's more expensive.
- I liked the second hotel. It was cleaner and more comfortable.
الأعلى أو الأدنى في المجموعة
استخدم the + التفضيل، ثم المجموعة غالبًا بعد in أو of. عكس the most هو the least.
- This is the oldest building in our town.
- It was the worst meal I've ever had.
- What's the least expensive way to get downtown?
المساواة: as ... as
استخدم as + الصفة المجردة + as للمساواة في صفة.
- My son is almost as tall as me now.
- The second movie was just as good as the first one.
- Is the subway as crowded as the bus?
درجة أقل: not as ... as
لبيان أن شيئًا أقل امتلاكًا للصفة، ويمكن أيضًا less + صفة + than، خصوصًا مع الصفات الطويلة.
- This hotel isn't as nice as the one we stayed in last year.
- My new job isn't as stressful as my old one.
- The second exam was less difficult than the first.
الفروق الكبيرة والصغيرة
much وa lot وfar قبل المقارنة لفرق كبير؛ وa bit وa little وslightly لفرق صغير. لا تستخدم very مع المقارنة.

المقارنة أم التفضيل؟
المقارنة مع than بين طرفين: Ana وBen، أو هاتفين، أو يومين، أو طهي شخصين. والتفضيل غالبًا مع the ثم in/of يقارن الواحد بكامل المجموعة: الصف كله، هواتف المتجر كلها، أيام الأسبوع السبعة، أو أفراد الأسرة.

أخطاء شائعة وسبب التصحيح
- خطأHer new job is more better than her old one.صوابHer new job is better than her old one.
better صيغة مقارنة بالفعل، فلا نضيف more.
- خطأHe is the most tallest player on the team.صوابHe is the tallest player on the team.
استخدم -est أو most، لا كليهما.
- خطأYour car is newer that mine.صوابYour car is newer than mine.
بعد المقارنة نستخدم than لا that.
- خطأThis is the more beautiful city I've ever visited.صوابThis is the most beautiful city I've ever visited.
لمقارنة الواحد بجميع الباقين استخدم التفضيل the most لا المقارنة more.
- خطأToday is very hotter than yesterday.صوابToday is much hotter than yesterday.
لا تأتي very مع المقارنة؛ استخدم much أو a lot أو far لفرق كبير.
- خطأMy phone is as expensive than yours.صوابMy phone is as expensive as yours.
نمط المساواة as + صفة + as؛ أما than فتتبع المقارنة.
Choosing an apartment

However, it was in the nicest neighborhood, and it was as quiet as a library. In the end, we chose the second apartment. It isn't as modern as the third one, but it's more comfortable than our old home, and the view is the best we've ever had.
