المعدود وحدات منفصلة مثل book؛ وغير المعدود كتلة أو فكرة بلا وحدات محددة مثل water, rice, music, information. يؤثر ذلك في a/an و-s وmuch/many وa few/a little.
لا تتبع القاعدة المنطق دائمًا: money غير معدود، لكن dollars وcoins معدودان. وadvice, information, furniture, news, luggage, homework غير معدودة في الإنجليزية ولو كانت معدودة في لغتك. استخدم وحدة مثل a piece of لعدّها.
تركيب الأسماء المعدودة وغير المعدودة
المعدود له مفرد وجمع: one chair, two chairs. غير المعدود له صيغة واحدة ويأخذ فعلًا مفردًا: The furniture is new. Money isn't everything.

- some للإثبات والعروض والطلبات: Would you like some tea? وany للنفي ومعظم الأسئلة: We don't have any eggs. Is there any milk?
- في الإثبات a lot of أكثر طبيعية من much: I drink a lot of coffee. تشيع much في النفي والسؤال، وبعد too وso: too much sugar, so much noise.
- غير المعدود الشائع: advice, information, furniture, luggage, baggage, homework, equipment, traffic, weather, work, money, bread, rice, water, music, fun. وكذلك news رغم -s: The news is good.
- وحدات: a piece of advice/information/furniture/luggage/news؛ a slice of bread/pizza/cake؛ a cup of tea؛ a glass of milk؛ a bottle of water؛ a bowl of soup؛ a bag of rice؛ a can of soda. أمريكيًا a homework assignment وبريطانيًا يشيع a piece of homework.
- قد يتغير العدّ بتغير المعنى: chicken اللحم وa chicken الحيوان؛ time الوقت وa time مناسبة (three times)؛ hair الشعر كله وa hair شعرة واحدة.
متى نستخدم الأسماء المعدودة وغير المعدودة؟
المعدود: أداة وعدد وجمع
أشخاص وحيوانات وأشياء نعدها واحدًا واحدًا. مفرده يحتاج محددًا مثل a/an/the/my/this، وجمعه غالبًا -s أو -es.
- I have a sister and two brothers.
- Is there an ATM near here?
- We need three more chairs for the guests.
غير المعدود: بلا a/an أو جمع
غالبًا سوائل ومواد وطعام (water, wood, sugar)، أو معانٍ (love, help, fun)، أو مجموعات تُعامل ككتلة (furniture, luggage). يأخذ فعلًا مفردًا.

many وmuch وa lot of
many/how many للجمع المعدود، وmuch/how much لغير المعدود؛ وa lot of/lots of لكليهما، وتكون a lot of أشيع في الإثبات من much.

كميات قليلة
a few مع الجمع وa little مع غير المعدود، بمعنى قليل وبنبرة إيجابية. حذف a يجعل few/little سلبيتين بمعنى ليس كثيرًا: Few tourists visit the village in winter.

- Could I have a little sugar in my tea?
- We only have a few minutes, so let's hurry.
عدّ غير المعدود بالوحدات
ضع وحدة أو وعاء قبل الاسم: a piece/slice/cup/bottle of. الوحدة نفسها معدودة وتقبل الجمع.
- Let me give you a piece of advice.
- I'd like two cups of coffee and a slice of cake, please.
- She brought three pieces of luggage for a weekend trip.

قد تتقارب المعاني وتختلف القواعد: suggestion وtip معدودان وadvice غير معدود؛ fact وdetail مقابل information؛ job مقابل work؛ suitcase وbag مقابل luggage؛ dollar مقابل money. استخدم a/an والأعداد والجمع مع الأولى، وsome/much/a lot of أو وحدة مثل a piece of مع الثانية.
