التمني يتخيل واقعًا مختلفًا، لذا يرجع الفعل خطوة كما في الشرط الثاني والثالث. I wish I knew تعني أنني لا أعرف، وI wish I had known تعني أنني لم أكن أعرف.
if only تتبع القواعد نفسها لكنها أقوى عاطفيًا. hope لما يمكن أن يتحقق، وwish لما ليس صحيحًا أو بعيد الاحتمال.
تركيب التمني: wish وif only
بعد wish وif only يرجع الفعل خطوة زمنية. that بعد wish اختيارية: I wish (that) I had more time.

- were الصيغة التقليدية مع الجميع بعد wish/if only وتُفضل رسميًا: I wish I were, I wish he were. was شائعة يوميًا: I wish it was Friday.
- wish + would عادةً لتغيير شخص آخر أو شيء، لا نفسك. لوضعك استخدم الماضي أو could: I wish I had more time، لا I wish I would have more time.
- لقدرة أو فرصة ماضية فاتتك: wish + could have + التصريف الثالث: I wish I could have come to your party.
- تأتي if only كثيرًا وحدها في تعجب: If only I had known!

متى نستخدم التمني: wish وif only؟
تمنيات الحاضر
wish + الماضي البسيط لوضع حالي تريد اختلافه، وwish + could لقدرة تفتقدها. الماضي هنا يدل على عدم الواقعية لا زمن ماضٍ.
