تقارن used to الماضي بالحاضر. I used to live in Mexico تعني أنك عشت هناك مدةً ولم تعد تعيش هناك. لذلك تشيع في الحديث عن الطفولة والعمل القديم وتغيّر الأماكن.
صيغتها واحدة مع الجميع ويتبعها الفعل المجرد. ليس لها مضارع؛ استخدم البسيط للعادات الحالية. وبعد did اكتب use to. ولا تخلط بينها وبين be used to + -ing التي تعني الاعتياد على شيء.
تركيب العادات الماضية: used to
used to واحدة مع جميع الضمائر ويتبعها الفعل المجرد. وفي السؤال والنفي تدل did على الماضي، فتتحول used إلى use.

- بعد did وdidn't اكتب use to: Did you use to...? I didn't use to... قد ترى didn't used to، لكن الصيغة المعيارية المطلوبة في الاختبارات هي didn't use to.
- تُنطق used to بالصوت /ˈjuːstə/، حيث s مهموسة ولا تسمع d. ويطابقها نطق use to بعد did. أما الفعل use العادي ففي I used a knife تُنطق used بالصوت /juːzd/.
- ليس لها مضارع؛ قل I usually take the bus لا I use to take the bus.
- يمكن استخدام never used to بدل didn't use to: I never used to drink coffee.
- لا تستخدمها لتحديد مدة أو عدد مرات دقيق: I lived in Lima for five years، لا I used to live in Lima for five years.

didn't use to أو never used to لما لم يكن صحيحًا أو معتادًا في الماضي. وللسؤال: Did you use to...?

يمكن استعمال would + الفعل المجرد، واختصارها 'd، بعد وضوح الزمن الماضي. لكنها لا تصف حالات be, have, live, like, know؛ استخدم used to معها.
- When I was little, my grandmother would bake bread every Sunday.
- After school, we'd play in the street until it got dark.
- We used to live near the ocean. (not would live: live is a state here)
الفرق عن be/get used to
be used to + اسم أو -ing تعني أن الأمر مألوف، وget used to أنه يصبح مألوفًا. تتغير be وget بحسب الزمن، فيمكن الحديث عن الحاضر أو الماضي أو المستقبل.
- I'm used to getting up early, so 6 a.m. is no problem.
- She's slowly getting used to the cold winters.
- Compare: I used to get up early. (I did in the past, but I don't now.)

كلا used to وwould يصف الفعل المتكرر؛ مثل استئجار كوخ كل صيف. لكن ملكية دراجة أو كون الجد رجل إطفاء حالتان تحتاجان used to؛ وركوب الدراجة ورواية القصص أفعال متكررة يمكن أن تأخذ would. تحتاج would إلى سياق ماضٍ واضح، لذا قد يبدأ السرد بـ used to ثم يستمر بـ would.
