تختلف طريقة التعبير عن الزمان والمكان بين اللغات؛ فالتركية تستخدم لواحق، والإسبانية تستخدم en في مواضع تحتاج الإنجليزية فيها إلى in أو on أو at.
النمط من الكبير إلى الصغير: in لفترة طويلة أو حيز، on ليوم أو سطح أو خط، at لوقت دقيق أو نقطة.
تركيب حروف جر الزمان والمكان
تخيّل هرمًا: in لأوسع الفترات والمساحات، on في الوسط، at لأدق النقاط.

- نقول in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening، لكن at night. ومع يوم محدد نستخدم on: on Sunday morning, on Friday night.
- لا حرف جر قبل next, last, this, every, today, tomorrow, yesterday, tonight: See you next Friday. I'm busy this week.
- الأمريكية on the weekend والبريطانية عادةً at the weekend. وللشوارع تستخدم الأمريكية on Main Street، والبريطانية in أو on Oxford Street.
- التاريخ أمريكيًا on May 5 ويُقرأ May fifth؛ وبريطانيًا يُكتب كثيرًا on 5 May ويُقرأ on the fifth of May.

للساعة والظهر ومنتصف الليل والشروق، وكذلك at night وat the end of the day.

لأيام الأسبوع والتواريخ والمناسبات، ولجزء من يوم محدد: on Monday morning, on Saturday night.

للشهور والسنوات والفصول والعقود والقرون، وللصباح وبعد الظهر والمساء.
