過去進行形
Past Continuous
was/were + 動詞の-ing形で、過去のある時点に進行中だった動作を表します。短い出来事を過去形で述べ、その背景となる動作を過去進行形で示せます。
使い方のポイント
I was reading when she called.では、読書が進行中の背景、電話がその途中の出来事です。主語に合わせてwasとwereを選びましょう。

Last Friday, our whole street lost power. It was about eight o'clock in the evening. I was helping my little brother with his homework, and my parents were watching a movie in the living room. Outside, it was raining hard, and the wind was shaking the windows. Suddenly, everything went dark. My brother screamed, and the dog started barking. While my dad was looking for a flashlight, my mom was trying to find some candles. When the lights came back on an hour later, nobody was doing homework anymore. We were all sitting on the floor, playing cards and laughing. My brother was winning, of course. "Can we have another blackout tomorrow?" he asked.
