Tema en inglés: Wish and If Only

Wish e if only expresan situaciones que querrías que fueran distintas ahora o en el pasado. Usa wish + pasado simple para el presente (I wish I had a car), wish + pasado perfecto para arrepentimientos pasados (I wish I had studied more) y wish + would para pedir que alguien o algo cambie (I wish you would listen).

I wish I knew significa que no lo sé; I wish I had known, que no lo sabía.

Cómo formar oraciones con wish e if only

Después de wish e if only, el verbo retrocede un paso en el tiempo. That después de wish es opcional: I wish (that) I had more time.

  • Wish + would suele referirse a otras personas o cosas, no a uno mismo. Para hablar de la propia situación, usa una forma de pasado o could: I wish I had more time (no I wish I would have more time).
  • Para expresar una capacidad pasada o una oportunidad perdida, usa wish + could have + participio pasado: I wish I could have come to your party.
  • If only suele aparecer por sí solo como exclamación: If only I had known!
  • Wish tiene otros dos usos con estructuras distintas: wish + to + verbo base es una forma formal de decir want (I wish to speak to the manager), y wish + persona + sustantivo expresa buenos deseos (We wish you a happy new year).

Cuándo se usa

  • I wish I had a bigger apartment. (My apartment is small.)
  • She wishes she didn't have to work on weekends.
  • I wish I could play the piano. (I can't play it.)

  • I wish I had studied harder in high school.
  • He wishes he hadn't sold his old guitar.
  • I wish we had taken more photos on our vacation.

3. Querer que alguien o algo cambie (wish + would)

A menudo expresa irritación o impaciencia.

  • I wish you would stop interrupting me.
  • I wish my neighbors wouldn't play loud music at night.
  • I wish the bus would come. We've been waiting for ages.

4. If only: un deseo más intenso

  • If only I had more time!
  • If only I hadn't said that to her!
  • If only the rain would stop!

5. I wish I were: be después de wish

Después de wish e if only, were es la forma tradicional de be para todas las personas, sobre todo en la escritura. En el habla cotidiana, también es común was después de I, he, she e it.

  • I wish I were on a beach right now.
  • If only my brother were here to help.
  • I wish it was the weekend. (informal)

La regla en contexto

Far from home

Elena moved to Toronto six months ago, and she loves her new job. Still, there are days when she misses home. She wishes she could see her grandmother more often, and she wishes the winters weren't quite so long. Sometimes she thinks about the move itself. "I wish I had learned more about the city before I came," she told her sister last week. "And I wish I hadn't brought so many clothes!" Her sister just laughed. Right now Elena is waiting for the bus in the snow. If only it would come! A man next to her is talking angrily on the phone. "I wish you would answer my messages," he says. Elena smiles. If only everyone's problems were that simple.
