Cómo elegir at, on o in
Como orientación general, at señala un punto, on un día o una superficie, e in un periodo o un espacio interior. Hay expresiones fijas que conviene aprender por separado.
| Forma | Estructura | Ejemplo en inglés |
|---|---|---|
| at (tiempo) | horas exactas y momentos concretos | at 7 o'clock, at 6:45, at noon, at midnight, at sunset |
| on (tiempo) | días y fechas | on Monday, on Friday morning, on July 4, on my birthday |
| in (tiempo) | meses, años, estaciones y periodos largos | in June, in 2024, in (the) winter, in the 1990s, in the morning |
| at (lugar) | un punto, una dirección o un lugar donde se desarrolla una actividad | at the door, at the bus stop, at 12 Oak Street, at work, at a party |
| on (lugar) | una superficie o línea, una planta de un edificio o transporte público | on the table, on the wall, on Oak Street, on the third floor, on the bus |
| in (lugar) | el interior de un espacio o una zona como una ciudad o un país | in the box, in the kitchen, in a car, in Tokyo, in Mexico |
- Partes del día: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, pero at night. Con un día concreto, usa on: on Sunday morning, on Friday night.
- No uses preposición delante de next, last, this, every, today, tomorrow, yesterday ni tonight: See you next Friday (no on next Friday). I'm busy this week.
- EE. UU. y Reino Unido: en Estados Unidos se dice on the weekend; en el Reino Unido suele decirse at the weekend. Para calles, en EE. UU. se usa on (on Main Street); en el Reino Unido, in u on (in Oxford Street).
- Fechas: en inglés estadounidense se dice on May 5 (May fifth); en inglés británico suele escribirse on 5 May y decirse on the fifth of May.

Elena's working week
El texto y las formas resaltadas están en inglés.
Elena works at a small hotel in Boston. Her day starts at 6:30 in the morning. She has breakfast in the kitchen and reads the news on the bus. The hotel is on Beacon Street, and her desk is on the first floor, next to the main entrance. She works from Monday to Friday, so she is free on weekends. In the summer, the hotel is very busy, and Elena often stays at work until nine. At night, she reads in bed or watches a movie on her laptop. Her birthday is on July 9, and this year she wants to spend it at the beach in Maine.

Preguntas frecuentes
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre in, on y at para hablar del tiempo?
Usa at con horas exactas (at 9:15, at noon), on con días y fechas (on Tuesday, on May 1) e in con periodos largos como meses, años y estaciones (in May, in 2020, in winter).
¿Se dice on the weekend o at the weekend?
Ambas formas son correctas. En Estados Unidos se dice on the weekend (o on weekends); en el Reino Unido suele decirse at the weekend.
¿Se dice in the bus o on the bus?
Se dice on the bus, on the train y on the plane porque son vehículos grandes en los que se puede caminar. Con coches y taxis se usa in: in the car, in a taxi.
¿Por qué se dice at night pero in the morning?
No hay una razón lógica: son expresiones fijas del inglés. Apréndelas juntas: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, pero at night.
¿Puedo decir See you Monday sin on?
Sí. En el inglés estadounidense informal suele omitirse on delante de los días (See you Monday). Si tienes dudas, consérvalo: See you on Monday es correcto en todas partes.
