Formas de futuro en inglés: will, going to y presente continuo

Will suele indicar decisiones espontáneas y opiniones; be going to, planes previos y predicciones basadas en indicios; el presente continuo expresa acuerdos y el simple, horarios.

Cómo formar will, going to y las formas de presente

Will y be going to van seguidos del verbo base. Will no cambia según la persona; going to necesita am, is o are.

  • Contracciones: I'll, you'll, he'll, she'll, it'll, we'll, they'll; won't = will not.
  • Will tiene una sola forma para todas las personas y va seguido del verbo base sin to: She will come, no She wills come ni She will to come.
  • Shall I...? y Shall we...? sirven para ofrecerse o sugerir algo en inglés británico. En el estadounidense shall es poco frecuente; suelen decir Should I...?, Do you want me to...? o Let's...

Cuándo se usa

1. Planes e intenciones (be going to)

Usa be going to para algo que ya has decidido hacer.

  • I'm going to start a new course in September.
  • We're going to save money for a new car.
  • What are you going to cook tonight?

2. Decisiones tomadas al hablar (will)

  • "There's no milk." "Really? I'll get some from the supermarket."
  • I'm tired. I think I'll go to bed early.
  • The fish looks good. I'll have that, please.

3. Ofrecimientos, promesas y peticiones (will)

  • Don't worry about dinner. I'll cook tonight.
  • I won't tell anyone. I promise.
  • Will you help me with this, please?

4. Predicciones: indicios presentes (going to) u opinión (will)

Usa will si la predicción expresa una opinión o creencia, a menudo después de I think, I'm sure, probably o maybe.

  • The sky is very dark. It's going to rain.
  • Watch out! You're going to drop those plates.
  • I think you'll love this book.

  • I'm having dinner with my parents on Sunday.
  • We're flying to Rome on Friday morning.
  • What are you doing this weekend?

6. Horarios y programas (presente simple)

  • The train leaves at 7:45 tomorrow morning.
  • The concert starts at eight, so don't be late.
  • When does your English course start?

  • tomorrow
  • tonight
  • later
  • soon
  • this weekend
  • next week
  • next month
  • next year
  • on Friday
  • the day after tomorrow
  • in ten minutes
  • in two years
  • in 2030
  • one day

No pongas preposición delante de next ni tomorrow: See you next Monday, no on next Monday. In + periodo de tiempo significa «dentro de»: I'll be ready in ten minutes, no after ten minutes.

¿Will o going to?

Dudas habituales

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Qué diferencia hay entre will y going to?

En inglés estadounidense es poco frecuente; suelen decir Should I...? o Do you want me to...?

¿Por qué no puedo decir when I will arrive?

Después de palabras temporales como when, before, after, until y as soon as, el inglés usa presente simple para hablar del futuro. Will va en la oración principal.
