Artículos en inglés: a, an y the con ejemplos

Tema en inglés: Articles: a, an, the

aa + sonido consonántico: una persona o cosa, no específicaa book, a car, a university, a one-way ticket
anan + sonido vocálico: una persona o cosa, no específicaan apple, an egg, an hour, an honest answer
thethe + cualquier sustantivo: el interlocutor sabe cuálthe sun, the book on my desk, the people next door
I love music. Coffee keeps me awake.
  • Elige a o an según el primer sonido de la palabra siguiente, no según su primera letra: a uniform (sonido /j/), a one-way street (sonido /w/), an hour (h muda), an X-ray (X empieza con sonido /e/).
  • Un adjetivo antes del sustantivo puede cambiar el artículo: an old car, pero a new car; an umbrella, pero a big umbrella.
  • Nunca uses a o an con sustantivos plurales o incontables: some apples (no an apples), some advice o a piece of advice (no an advice).
Usa the con ríos, mares, océanos, cordilleras y países que incluyen palabras como States, Kingdom o Republic (the Nile, the Pacific, the Alps, the United States).

Cuándo se usa

  • I saw a dog in the street.
  • There's a bank near my apartment.
  • Can I have an apple?

2. A/an: profesiones y descripciones

  • My mother is a doctor.
  • He's an engineer.
  • This is a very old house.

3. The: el interlocutor sabe cuál

  • I saw a dog and a cat. The dog was very big.
  • Can you close the door, please?
  • The woman in the blue coat is my teacher.

4. The: elementos únicos y superlativos

Usa the con elementos únicos (the sun, the moon, the internet) y antes de superlativos y números ordinales (the best, the tallest, the first).

  • The moon is very bright tonight.
  • This is the best pizza in town.
  • Take the second street on the left.

Si añades the, te refieres a cosas específicas.

  • Dogs need a lot of exercise.
  • I don't drink coffee in the evening.
  • Children learn languages quickly.

6. Expresiones fijas

Algunas expresiones frecuentes no llevan artículo, incluso con un sustantivo singular: go to bed, go to work, at home, by bus, have breakfast. Otras llevan the: in the morning, go to the movies, listen to the radio. En EE. UU. se dice in the hospital y en el Reino Unido también se usa in hospital.

  • I go to bed at eleven.
  • She goes to work by bus.
  • We listen to the radio in the morning.

Expresiones frecuentes sin artículo

a / anthe
I had a sandwich and a salad. (primera mención)The sandwich was good, but the salad was too salty. (los que acabo de mencionar)
Can I borrow a pen? (cualquier bolígrafo)Can I borrow the red pen? (ese, no otro)

La regla en contexto

The bakery on my street

There is a small bakery on my street. An old man and his daughter run it. The bakery opens at six, and there is always a long line outside the door. I usually buy a loaf of bread and an apple pie. The pie is the best in the city, but it is a bit expensive. On Fridays, the old man gives me a free cookie. "For the student who comes every day," he says with a smile. I don't usually eat sugar in the morning, but I always eat the cookie on the bus to school. Life is better with good bread and kind neighbors.

Dudas habituales

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Cuándo se usa a y cuándo an?

Conviene revisar cada sustantivo contable singular: delante necesita a, an, the o una palabra como my o this, salvo en expresiones fijas como by bus o at home.
